Core Ideals

Devouring fear, creating darkness

Dendar, the Night Serpent was a powerful deity with a snake-like appearance. She was strongly present in yuan-ti religion, and also appeared in Silmaen mythology, as well as other religions.

History

Dendar first appeared in 66'034 b. OW, reportedly feeding on the dark dreams of early elves. She eventually clashed with the Silmarilus and was banished into the Abyss. She resided on an upper layer, however, and was able to send avatars and shards of herself to meddle in mortal affairs; notably, she was among the first serpent gods, and participated in the creation of the yuan-ti race. Thereafter, she became one of their primary gods and a summary member of the SSanel "pantheon".

Mythos

Silmaen Animism

In the Silmaen religion, Dendar appeared as a contestant of the Silmarilus and a devourer of their fears.

After being imprisoned in the Abyss, Dendar supposedly continued to nourish herself on the fears of mortals, and elves completely consumed by paranoia would have their soul stolen and devoured by her in the afterlife.

Dendar's Appearance in the Naevenilsk

"But always, no matter how strong Sussil's sun shone, there remained shadows beneath the leaves, under the rocks. To sleep, some Children hid there, leaving the protection of the sun and offering themselves to the darkness and the shadows. Out of their fears and nightmares a new deity was born, and Dendar the Night Serpent rose, devouring the sun and threatening to consume everything. But Callobar the Dawn Warrior and Meanillaue the Moon-Blade wrestled her, but she was too powerful to kill, so they brought her into the depths of imprisonment, and locked her behind great iron doors in the deepest darkness [in the Abyss]. Out of rage, Dendar coughed up the sun, and strong rays of it broke through the cracks, creating the Fountains [the Fountains of Creation, in the Elemental Plane of Fire]."

Yuan-Ti Religion

In yuan-ti religion, Dendar was a continually growing force in the deepest darkness that was feeding on the fear and dark dreams of non-yuan-ti. Eventually, she would break down the iron doors that held her captive, eat the sun, and plunge the world in darkness before devouring it.

Her priests cultivated this idea by torturing people and making them fear the darkness, feeding Dendar so she may rise sooner.
