Sketch-Paint Art TechniqueLore - Culture Canon

A modern starquintist priest sketch-paint, Litchy, Cuprien Empire, ~700 b. OW

Human picture art was very consistent throughout history, and mainly revolved around a single style: sketch-paint.

Sketch-Paint

This style developed already in the early human societies in the Archaen. It consisted of drawing a sketch of the painting on a surface, coloring in the fields with paints, and drawing the outlines in black afterwards. This technique was put to use in many areas, from state to urban level.

Material Sources

Surface. People used hardened clay, stone, wood, parchment, paper and various other kinds of sheets.
Sketch-Pens. A common method was to finely dent the surface. Alternatively, pencils of hardened minerals were used which could easily be painted over. Sometimes the actual paint was also used for the sketch.
Paint. Paint could be produced out of various sources, including squashed bugs, plants, and tinted oils.

Outline. Commonly the paint was just used, but also marine ink and inktree sap could be applied.

Historical Styles

Human art worked a lot with color association: if the pentagon over a figure's head was the same yellow as their blade, this implied that the figure had achieved their success by fighting.

Archaen. Originally, this art was very figurative, used poor colors, and had large patches of color.

Trensandorian. This style emerged in Trensandorian Colupan. It was more abstract and featured strongly accentuated facial features as well as sinewy bodies. Standard. Out of the Archaen style developed international standard, which looked similar both on Litchy and Balebu. It had a moderate realistic approach to art, but still didn't master perspectives or angles.
