The Legend of Tyr's Surrender of Tir NaelLore - Event Canon

231 OW

Wary of the long siege, Tyr decided to make a deal with Moradin's sons and surrender the Star fortress of Tir Nael.

The Legend

As told by the Cuprien elven sage Ana in 238.

The Siege of Tir Nael had lasted already three half-centuries, and Tyr was growing desperate to rejoin the free world. She knew humanity was suffering, that they had lost the power of and faith in their gods, but she could not reach them. The dwarf-sons had built a terribly strong and ever-strengthening net around the fortress; she felt her power pooling at the edge of the net, losing her connection to the Star’s fugue; and even her short messages to her few faithful could be sent only with great effort. She could not live in the dark and besieged fortress, doing nothing but healing the wounds of her companions so they could once more futilely battle the dwarf-sons, while her people languished alone.

Rejecting this battle which she had never wanted to be a part of, she asked of the dwarf-sons to surrender. They rejected her, laughing at her misery and declaring she had brought her lonely fate upon herself on the Day of the Frostwalk. Still, she was kind and patient, and even healed the wounds of one of them; then she returned to the dark fortress.

It was the human people who came to her aid. Hearing of her pain, and seeking once more her closeness, they rallied together and asked the dwarves to free their goddess. The dwarven king of mortals, seeking the despair-coupled-hope of the humans, agreed to ask his gods to stop; however, there was one troubling condition: if Tyr was to go free, Tempus and Auril would be taken into captivity in Thom Faldur. The humans agreed, for the choice was easy: if they agreed, they would regain their goddess and find peace with the dwarves; if the siege continued, they would gain nothing.

So the deal was struck, and Tyr opened the gates while Tempus and Auril were sleeping. But they were, all of them, deceived; for the dwarves had no intention to let free Tyr. Once Tempus and Auril were in chains and brought away, the Moradin the Dwarf-Father turned to Tyr and spoke: “You love your people; I feel none of your love. You seek to heal them; I want them in pain. They shall be ruled by blood, flames and death, and you shall be ruled by loneliness and pain.” And as he spoke, Tyr was seized, and was brought to the greatest mountain of the Second-World; and she was chained to its peak, so far from everything that no one could ever reach her, and she was condemned to shiver eternally from the cold.

Historical Context

Though the legend reported here is very Oshmondu-centered, the actual events of the siege were tied closely to Thozeia, and the ongoing Searing Desolation there. Local effects are completely ignored, whereas the marginal influence of Oshmondu and the human faithfuls is grandly exaggerated.
