Orcish Naming ConventionsLore - Culture Canon

Orcish names were derived from their parent cultures. This page attempts to present an overview of said cultures and their names, drawing from known sources.

Shared Traits

The "uruk" suffix honorific was used by important individuals, typically chiefs of major clans, and usually had a religious meaning. It meant so much as "orcs", in the sense of the shared soul that animated all orcs - a holy power, gifted by the gods.

Drubark

South Moonsea Drubark / Ferdrskjisle Tribes

Drubark / Mjnfar tribes are mostly derived from Norman roots, though usually "orcified" - a bit shortened.

Male names almost invariably end in "-or" or "-og", female names in consonants (often "-rd").

Among the Ferdrskjisle, it is customary for orcs to have just a given name (no name tying back to the family). They get a second nickname in a moment called "naming", in reference to some significant feat (often involving killing or damaging enemies). This was a practice similar to that of Bonecrunch, and different from the rest of Drubark.

Known names:[1]

  • Male: Red Beregor, Ragnor Scarred, Harog Firesmoke
  • Female: Wise Sigord

The Wild Hills strand on Mjnfar is a derivative culture, similar to that of the Lost Tribes. Their naming scheme derived from the Skijspik traditions, but with Orcish language. Known individuals are Agrig-o-Goswog (M) and Huord-o-Goswog (F, his daughter).

Continental (Bonecrunch)

What is broadly understood as the Continental branch (meaning northern and central Balebu) were the peoples that occasionally federated into the "Bonecrunch" clan.

The Continental culture drew inspiration from Argyon goblinoids, whose trade and technology allowed it to advance. Its names, however, were not Kyrgale.

  • Warlords: Orgen-Uruk, Uglaf, Faglan[3]; Vargan, Tergerogh, Targhed [2]
  • Shamans:Berda, Snatha, Silthrena
